Hot Yoga

What is hot yoga?

Hot yoga consists of a series of yoga poses done in a heated room. The room is usually maintained at a temperature of 95 to 100 degrees. As you can imagine, a vigorous yoga session at this temperature promotes profuse sweating and makes the body very warm, and therefore more flexible. Bring water for hydration, a mat, and a bath or beach towel.

What are the benefits of hot yoga?

  • Strengthening, cleansing, and removal of toxins
  • Increased flexibility
  • Detoxification
  • Focus

Physical Benefits of Hot Yoga

One of the biggest benefits of hot yoga is how flexible it makes your body. As the body warms up, muscles loosen up and allow you to reach more poses with less strain on the body. The profuse sweating you’ll do in the hot yoga room can also help expel toxins. Warmer temperatures also help expand lung capacity, and the heated room can help act as a vaporizer, easing any respiratory issues.

Mental Benefits of Hot Yoga

Like any form of yoga, hot yoga helps promote focus and emotional balance. The poses focus on centering one’s mind and body. The increased heat and toxins released with the sweat can help lessen stress and anxiety, and relieve tension held in the body.

Who benefits from hot yoga?

Anyone! Hot yoga is especially helpful in promoting weight loss, as the increased sweating can help shed more pounds faster. Hot yoga is also helpful for those with physical injuries in their rehabilitation, as the heat helps loosen muscles and reduce strain, and with it, the risk of further injury. For people with breathing problems, the heat of the hot yoga room can help expand their lung capacity and make it easier for them to complete poses. This class is design for all levels, but the heat can be intense so it’s important you know your limits. After you do hot yoga a couple of times, you get to appreciate the temperature.

Tips for Your First Hot Yoga Class

HYDRATE! Since your body will be releasing more sweat than normal, the risk of dehydration increases with hot yoga. Bring a big bottle of water and drink regularly.

It may take a few sessions to get completely used to the heat, so if you feel the need to step out for a second and regroup, don’t hesitate. The heat can get very intense, especially for first-timers.

Most importantly, go in with an open mind, ready to break a few sweats!
